Thank You to the over 1,000 people who attend this year’s Annual Meeting on Nov. 30 - the largest meeting in our 126 year history! Wells Fargo CEO John Stumpf praised Winston-Salem, the Piedmont Triad and North Carolina for our commitment to developing our economy and being an outstanding business location. And special congratulations to Jeff Smith of Smitty’s Notes for receiving the Duke Energy Citizenship Award and to KeraNetics for receiving the Cook Medical Innovation Award! The Duke Energy Citizenship and Service Award is a tribute to individuals or groups who make a difference in their communities or places of work by using their time, talents, and compassion to positively impact the lives of others. Previous recipients have been J.D. Wilson, Rence Callahan, Susan Ivey, Michael Wells, Michael Lischke, Harold Martin and Edwin Welch.
Smith was recognized for creating and producing “Smitty’s Notes”, a website and e-newsletter that he began in 1997 to inform residents and newcomers about sporting and social events, restaurants and clubs, the arts community, downtown redevelopment, charitable fundraisers, and a wide range of other community news and events in and around Winston-Salem. Smitty’s Notes currently has more than 11,000 subscribers and has been instrumental in getting people engaged and excited about our community’s activities and accomplishments.
The Cook Medical Innovation Award is presented with the Chamber’s Technology Council to the most outstanding locally developed and novel technologies that positively affect society. Technologies were evaluated on the following criteria: simplicity of solution for the complexity of the problem; societal impact; effect on a marketplace or the establishment of a new market; and exemplary demonstration of creativity.
KeraNetics received this year’s award for its topical gel for the treatment of thermal and radiation burns. KeraNetics is a biomaterials company focused on creating keratin-based products for use in areas of regenerative medicine, trauma care, and cell culture tools. The Company is headquartered in Winston-Salem and located in the Piedmont Triad Research Park.The past recipients have been Primo Water and Virginia Tech-Wake Forest University School of Biomedical Engineering.
The Chamber’s Annual Meeting is the preeminent business event in Winston-Salem and is held in partnership with the Winston-Salem Rotary Club. With an expected crowd of over 1,000 business and community leaders, the Chamber’s Annual Meeting is our area’s largest single gathering of business people each year. It is the only meeting in the community that gathers CEOs and high-level corporate executives to discuss the Chamber's economic development accomplishments for the current year and its plans for the future.
