2016 Truliant Small Business Award


The Winston Salem Chamber of Commerce has always been a supporter of local small businesses. This year, businesses will be nominated and awarded for their hard work in the community. The 2016 Truliant Small Business Award will offer recognition to small companies for their success and contributions to the community, while providing the opportunity to showcase their company at the Chamber’s Annual Meeting. The Annual Meeting is the largest business meeting in Winston-Salem and Forsyth County with more than 1,000 of North Carolina’s most prominent business leaders present.


Starting in mid-June, we will solicit nominations from as many sources in the community as possible. This includes emails to small businesses and those that provide services to small businesses, business and civic associations, advertisements on our website, President’s Letter, social media, press releases, etc.

  • Anyone can nominate a company
  • The nomination process is extremely easy and will only take about 1 minute
  • Anyone can nominate more than one company
  • A company only needs to be nominated once
  • Award winners ARE NOT chosen by how many nominations they receive
  • Self-nominations by employees and owners encouraged

Please submit nominations to Joseph Hamby NO LATER THAN July 29, 2016.

Application Process

Chamber staff will contact nominees to congratulate them on their nomination and explain the application process. Nominees will have approximately two weeks to compile a small written packet that covers company history, business or management philosophy, response to challenges, innovative products or services offered and community-oriented contributions in their own words.  The application does not require companies to disclose financials.  The deadline for completing the application is August 31, 2016. Any Chamber member headquartered in Forsyth County with 50 FTE’s or less (organization-wide), can be nominated.

We strive to recognize a mix of excellent, diverse small businesses that meet the following criteria:

  • Have 50 full-time employees or less (company-wide)
  • Are viable for-profit companies and successful in their business
  • Have been in business for at least three years
  • Maintain a responsible and rewarding workplace environment
  • Give back to our community through volunteerism, contributions, or in-kind services

Award Selection Process

  • A contact person from each nominated company receives a brief award questionnaire.
  • The questionnaire is easy to fill out and focuses on gathering information specifically in regard to the measuring the company against the award criteria.
  • Only companies that return the questionnaire are considered for an award.
  • An independent panel of judges reviews the award questionnaires received and decides on the award winners.

Award Criteria

Nominees will be judged on the following criteria:

  • Mission and vision of company (maximum score 30 points)
  • Community contributions (maximum score 30 points)
  • Business hurdle and how they handle it (maximum score 20 points)
  • Revenue and employee growth (maximum score 20 points)
  • One additional business factor (bonus – maximum 10 points)


The application packets are scored by the council.   The council is comprised of Truliant Federal Credit Union staff, four college/university small business experts, and a Chamber of Commerce representative.

Five applicants will be named as finalists, with the award recipient announced at the 2016 Annual Meeting on Wednesday, October 19th.
