TO GOVERNOR BEV PERDUE AND MEMBERS OF THE FORSYTH COUNTY LEGISLATIVE DELEGATION:
We, the undersigned businesses and organizations, affirm our support for and urge the State to move forward with constructing the missing link to the Interstate 74 transportation corridor.
I-74 is an important economic development project, not “just another local urban loop”, but a project of statewide significance and vital to continued economic growth throughout the State of North Carolina and the Piedmont Triad.
The long overdue and desperately needed improvements to US 52 cannot be undertaken without segments of I-74 being in place. Further delays on these critical improvements costs lives and puts existing local businesses and their employees at risk.
The current environmental studies/permits will expire if work does not begin by 2011. Failure to act now would be an irresponsible act wasting millions of dollars already invested and will likely require the existing studies to be done again at considerable expense and time delays.
Hundreds of people (individuals and businesses) have been in limbo for two decades, unable to improve their property, sell their property, close estates. Continued delays in construction of this vital transportation corridor will continue to pro-long unnecessary negative impacts on these families. It is beyond time to bring closure to their suffering.
We support the construction of Interstate 74 and request that the State of North Carolina fulfill the commitment made in 1989 to the residents and businesses of this region to construct this transportation improvement project. Failure to complete this vital link in the regional transportation network in a timely manner will cause additional economic hardship on residents in the corridor, will decrease current and future community mobility and safety, will lessen future economic development opportunities and will cause additional environmental and air quality concerns.
