Salvation Army Receives Grant from Leon Levine Foundation The Salvation Army of Greater Winston-Salem is pleased to announce that The Leon Levine Foundation has awarded a $25,000 grant to assist with the ongoing implementation of their service to individuals and families facing homelessness, hunger, and crisis. The grant will also be used for educational support to school-aged children served by The Salvation Army. Established by Leon Levine, founder of Family Dollar Stores, the foundation’s mission is “to improve the human condition by creating permanent, measurable, life-changing impact.” Sandra and Leon Levine have established a legacy of philanthropy in the Charlotte area and in 2017 expanded their reach to other major cities in the Carolinas, including Winston-Salem. Tom Lawrence, executive director of The Leon Levine Foundation, explained: “We’re excited to maintain and strengthen our partnerships with organizations in Winston-Salem. We believe that the Salvation Army of Greater Winston-Salem is providing critical services to hundreds of people through its core programming. The agency’s willingness to help those in need work toward self-sufficiency aligns well with our mission.” The Salvation Army of Greater Winston-Salem is in its 111th year of providing services such as The Center of Hope Family Residence, the only family emergency homeless residence in Forsyth County, distributing food to families in need, serving a community breakfast every day of the year, operating two Boys & Girls Clubs, and ensuring that thousands of children receive Christmas gifts with the annual Angel Tree program. Salvation Army Area Commander Major Stan Colbert explains the significance of the award, “A gift of this size is a true blessing for the families and individuals we serve, especially the children who currently reside with their families at the Center of Hope, and the youth of our community who attend our Boys & Girls Clubs. We are deeply grateful to The Leon Levine Foundation for their support.” About the Salvation Army The Salvation Army, an International movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian church.
