The Ambassadors are a very important part of the Chamber and are selected on the basis of their leadership, engagement, energy and integrity. Ambassadors help in many ways: they attend ribbon cuttings, assist with connecting events (such as the Business Before Hours and Business After Hours), support larger Chamber events (such as the Annual Meeting and State of the Economy Luncheon), and serve as liaisons between new members and the Chamber community at large. Ambassadors also provide a communication link between the Chamber and the local business community. Through their participation in Chamber events and outreach, they are key in helping members understand how they can best use the Chamber’s programs and services.

Tell us about your business or company:
As a financial advisor, I've developed a process for a group of successful individuals who are within 10-15 years of retirement, who among other things, are looking to “not” be so serious about work. My process helps us figure out what to do when the paycheck stops.

Thrivent Financial is an amazing company that has been named to the world’s most ethical companies 5 times now. We're more than financial services. We're a not-for-profit, membership organization of Christians – and we're starting a new conversation about money.

What brought you to your current career?
At the young age of 9 I was sitting in my 3rd grade class (the teacher asked us what we wanted to do when we grew up, of course after I retired from the NFL, I looked at her and said I have no idea) She made me write a list of things that I enjoyed to do and realized that I really loved to help people and had a unique understanding and passion for money. I started asking around about what people did and luckily for me my Uncle “V” was in town. He is a well-known financial Advisor from Chicago; he explained how he helped his clients manage the money so that they could have a retirement that they deserved. BINGO I made up my mind and the rest is history in the making.

How has being a Winston-Salem Chamber member influenced your business?

Explaining to people the importance of the Chamber and that they need to leverage the Chamber to their unique situation.

More about Betsy Spencer

I am a native of Aiken, SC; I also lived in Knoxville, Atlanta, and Hilton Head prior to moving to Winston-Salem in 1997. Winston-Salem is the first place I’ve lived that felt like a “forever” home. My career started in accounting and banking before moving to sales in 1994. What I love about sales is the opportunity to meet so many different people and form lasting relationships along the way. I enjoy being active; a former runner, I now do more yoga, Jazzercise and ballroom dance.

Tell us about your business:
Casual Furniture World is a local, family-owned business serving the Triad (and Myrtle Beach) since 1985. We offer great customer service, design services and white glove delivery service for our customers.

I have been in sales since 1994, and have worked in a variety of fields including accounting software and student loans. I like B2B sales, and it’s important to me to work for a company that is ethical and provides great service and products. It seemed like the perfect time to work with a company that provides furniture to create the ideal outdoor space for businesses since so many local companies now have patios, pools, etc. for their customers and tenants.

How has being a WS Chamber member influenced your business?
Being a Chamber member has given me the opportunity to meet so many people! I have participated in the networking groups through the Chamber, and attend the Business Before Hours and VIBE events. It’s a great way to get introductions or hear about opportunities I wouldn’t know about otherwise. Also, the staff at the Chamber have been extremely helpful in providing introductions or offering suggestions. And being a Chamber member, and especially an Ambassador, gives me credibility when I introduce myself to a new prospect.

What do you enjoy about being an Ambassador?
It’s a great group of people, so I enjoy seeing everyone at meetings. And it’s nice to have the opportunity to know the new members and reach out to them. I also get to connect with a lot of friends, both old and new, at Chamber events.

Who is Matt Winnicki?
I retired from a 23+ year career with the Winston-Salem Police Department and found my calling with IDShield & LegalShield Business Solutions. I specialize in Employee Benefits and am certified in Small Business, Commercial Driver, and Law Enforcement Officer Legal Plans. I have received specialized training in the area of Identity Theft from the United States DOJ, Kroll, the world’s leading risk consulting company, Winston-Salem Police Department and is mentored by Morgan Wright, an internationally recognized expert on cybersecurity strategy, cyber terrorism, identity theft and privacy and John P. Gardner Jr., a nationally recognized expert on Identity Theft and author or “If You Are Me, Then Who Am I” and Chicken Soup for the Entrepreneur’s Soul. I am married to my wife Tena and have four children. I’m the 2016-2017 President of the Rotary Club of Yadkinville and I enjoy Hockey, Cycling, Golf and Volunteering.

What is LegalShield Business Solutions/IDShield?
IDShield is the most comprehensive Identity Theft Protection available to consumers today and has been for 16 years. Powered by Kroll, IDShield monitors a consumer’s identity from multiple angles, provides a $5 Million Dollar Service Guarantee and will restore a member’s identity to pre-theft status without any additional cost to our members.

LegalShield is a 44 year old company that has disrupted the way legal services for individuals, families and business are delivered, making access to the legal system and your rights available and affordable to everyone in the United States and Canada. At LegalShield we believe in the American Dream and the right of every person to be free of legal hassles so they can focus their attention on the pursuit of happiness. At LegalShield we provide a range of services designed to protect and enhance the lives of millions.

What brought you to your current career?
In 2006 my wife’s Identify was stolen. Through that painful event I learned just how vulnerable we all are to the ravages of Identity Theft. After losing almost $18,000, enduring a law suit, having wages garnished and taking 4+ years to put our lives back together I learned about IDShield and how this catastrophe could be minimized and prevented. Helping others from being a victim is my personal mission.

As a police officer, I experienced firsthand what the lack of access to the legal system can do to someone. Since the world we live in revolves around the law, having access to experience and affordable legal help to make good decisions and stay out of trouble really made sense to me. From providing Estate Planning to giving someone affordable access to an attorney to make better family decisions and prevent being taken advantage of, I feel good about what I do.

How has being a Winston-Salem Chamber member influenced your business?
The Winston-Salem Chamber has been instrumental in the growth of my business. It had opened up opportunities for me to grow my business, provide exposure and also had provided valuable educational and marketing tools that I needed as a new entrepreneur.

What do you enjoy about being as Ambassador?
I enjoy being able to support the values of the Chamber, being liaison for members, learning about the great business that make up the business landscape of Winston-Salem and the additional access it provides me to open new doors for growing my business.
