Winston-Salem’s growing reputation as a global hub for regenerative medicine and life sciences innovation was reinforced this week as a Japanese delegation visited the city to explore its world-class research, commercialization, and startup support assets.
The group of 20 delegates, representing 16 Japanese companies as well as government and investment organizations, was hosted by Greater Winston-Salem Inc. as part of a multi-city tour organized by the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) and the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina (EDPNC). Their visit to Winston-Salem focused on Innovation Quarter and the city’s broader biotech ecosystem.
Highlights of the day included a walking tour of the Innovation Quarter, an in-depth visit to the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine (WFIRM), and presentations from leaders of the North Carolina Regenerative Medicine Engine and the National Center for the Advancement of Clinical Trials. Delegates also engaged in direct conversations with local biotech and healthtech companies, gaining insight into Winston-Salem’s commercial activity and collaborative culture.
“This visit affirms what we already know: Winston-Salem’s life sciences sector is globally competitive and uniquely positioned for international partnership,” said Ellis Keifer, Vice President of Economic Development at Greater Winston-Salem, Inc. “Innovation Quarter is not just a local asset. It is a global destination for regenerative medicine, and companies around the world are taking notice. Walking through the Innovation Quarter alongside global executives and witnessing their enthusiasm was a powerful reminder of the remarkable ecosystem our community has created.”
The delegation was formally welcomed by Mayor Allen Joines and representatives from the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners during a closing reception with local elected officials, industry partners, and institutional leaders.
As Winston-Salem continues to attract global interest, the visit highlights both the depth of the region’s innovation economy and its growing relevance on the international stage.
