In support of local students, families, and educators, Greater Winston-Salem Inc.’s board of directors has recently unanimously approved a contribution of $100,000 towards the debt reduction for Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools, via the Winston-Salem Foundation’s WS/FCS Futures Fund. Along with the donations of other local organizations, this funding has allowed WS/FCS to pay off its debt to the NC Department of Public Instruction, an important step toward restoring the district’s financial stability.

“I appreciate our board of directors and their commitment to our schools,” says Mark Owens, President and CEO of Greater Winston-Salem Inc. “It is important for us to stand alongside local companies and organizations as we work together to strengthen education. Our school system is a vital partner in developing the talent pipeline that supports our community’s growth and attracts new employers.”

Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools’ financial challenges impact the entire community, regardless of whether someone is a student, parent, or employee. A strong, well-resourced school system is essential to building a skilled workforce and attracting continued economic investment.

“Our Board recognizes that the success of our schools and the success of our economy are deeply connected,” says Mike Lancaster, chair of the Greater Winston-Salem Inc. Board of Directors. “Supporting WS/FCS is investing in our community’s future, and aligns with our vision to be a top mid-sized city. With this contribution we aim to ensure that students, educators, and families have the support they need to thrive.”

The funds donated by Greater Winston-Salem Inc. to the Winston Salem Foundation came exclusively from a grant supporting efforts to position Winston-Salem as a top mid-sized city and did not include any membership investment dollars.

The WS/FCS Futures Fund is one of four funds under the All In For Our Schools campaign, which also includes the Education Foundation Classroom Supplies Fund, WS/FCS Student Success Fund and the Every Shelf, Every Student book drive.
