The Chamber’s Keep it Local initiative promotes community support for local business ventures. Spending locally creates a strong economy and a sense of place which gives our town its unique lifestyle. The Keep it Local campaign will feature a different segment of businesses each month in 2018. February is Arts and Innovation Month.

Art for Arts Sake

Art for Art’s Sake is a Winston-Salem volunteer-based nonprofit organization whose mission is to “build, educate and celebrate community through art”.

On any given weeknight, or on the weekends, you’ll find a schedule of programs and classes – all free to the public – that are designed to further the creation and enjoyment of art. AFAS also hosts dance classes in styles including swing and hip-hop.

For kids, a popular gathering occurs every first and third Saturday: the Saturday ART Jam. Kids of all ages are able to drop-in from 12:30-3pm for an art project. All ages are welcome. There is no need to register ahead of time, just show up and bring your imagination!

The AFAS building at 630 North Liberty Street features the Red Dog Gallery, community space for classes and special events, artists in residence, and the ARTivity on the Green park. Murals in the ARTivity on the Green park are occasionally repainted, giving visitors a chance to see the muralists in action when they create new art. In addition, the building’s interior features murals by Chad Beroth, Sarah Hensley, Stewart Knight, Jennifer O’Kelly, Haydon Tedder, and Dennis Wells.
