The block of Second Street between Spruce and Marshall Streets will be closed at 9:00 AM Monday, July 20 to install new metal poles and mast arms for traffic signals at Second and Marshall Streets. Marshall Street will remain open; however, lanes may be closed at times. Work is estimated to be completed the evening of Tuesday, July 21, but could take longer. A detour will be posted while Second Street is closed.

When this work is completed the poles and masts will be replaced successively at the intersections of Third and Church streets, Fifth and Church streets, and Fifth and Cherry streets. These intersections will remain open, but the traffic signals will be turned off. Traffic will be controlled by temporary stop signs. Police officers will assist traffic at the intersection of Fifth and Cherry during high-volume times. All work is scheduled to be completed during the week of July 27.

Also in the upcoming weeks, a contractor for the city will be replacing the signal cabinets at most other downtown intersections. This work will be done at night to minimize traffic disruption.

The improvements are part of a comprehensive upgrade of the city’s traffic signal system that includes almost 400 traffic signals connected by 150 miles of fiber-optic cable and a wireless system for downtown traffic signals. For more information call CityLink 311.
