Employers are encouraged to develop a Back to Work plan and designate a coordinator in the workplace to handle COVID 19-related protocols. The coordinator should be familiar with all federal, state, and local guidelines as well as industry-specific guidance.

Social distancing, increased cleaning and sanitation, and masking remain important precautions. If employees can work from home, they should continue to do so.

For employees in non-healthcare industries, a cotton mask that covers the nose and mouth is sufficient to reduce transmission when used in conjunction with social distancing.

Non-essential travel should be discouraged. If one of your employees has traveled, particularly to a high-risk area, they should be screened before returning to work.

If you choose to implement pre-shift screenings for all employees, it should include a temperature check in addition to screening questions – temperature checks alone are not sufficient to identify a person’s risk.

It is important for everyone to remain cautious as phased reopening progresses. With the social distancing precautions that have been in place, the peak occurs later with fewer total cases. Current national projections estimate the peak in July. Continued precautions are necessary to prevent a “W” shaped curve, in which reopening could cause a new spike in cases.

The current precautions that we can all take to keep ourselves and our workforce healthy are essential for reducing both the economic and societal detrimental effects of COVID 19 transmission.
