Winston-Salem has earned national recognition as a top location for the food manufacturing industry, ranking #4 in the United States according to a new report by Global Location Strategies (GLS). 

The GLS report looks at key trends and market updates in the sector, while ranking more than 300 US metros on their desirability as a place for food manufacturers to locate or expand.  

It is an important industry sector to understand, accounting for 14% of all manufacturing employment and 1.1% of total U.S. employment. Recent job growth within the sector indicates the resilience of the industry, having grown by 8% since pre-pandemic levels.  

The report evaluates more than 100 factors to identify optimal locations for food manufacturing, including workforce availability, logistics, infrastructure, and operating costs. In the 2025 report, Winston-Salem rose to #4 nationally, up from #10 in 2024, with an overall score of 89.47.

Winston-Salem stands out as an optimal destination for food manufacturing companies, offering a well-aligned workforce, available sites, and a strong regional supply chain. The sector thrives here with both new and legacy companies, including household names like Garner Foods, known for Texas Pete, Purple Crow, Dewey’s Bakery, and more.
